The burial site was found in the city park, and only recently members of a search group managed to get permission for an excavation. The frontline soldiers and officers died a month before the end of World War II, after Soviet troops took Kaliningrad, known then as the German city of Koenigsberg. Their remains have been reburied near the Burial Mound of Military Glory at the Kaliningrad cemetery.
