UN nuclear watchdog has narrowly rejected a resolution by Arab nations, which calls on Israel to open up about its nuclear activities. A former assistant to Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Hussein Haridi, was not surprised.

“They argue Israel’s widely assumed atomic arsenal is a threat to regional security, while the US voiced concerns that the draft proposal could jeopardize Middle-East peace talks,” Haridi said.

Haridi also recalled similar moves made previously.

“The US and the Western powers have always rejected any Arab initiative to make Israel join the Non-Proliferation Treaty, so the position taken by the American delegation in Vienna does not come as a surprise for us,” Haridi told RT.
