The Israeli Prime Minister has urged Russia to use its influence to help solve the standoff over Iran's nuclear programme. Ehud Olmert relayed the message during a visit to the Kremlin on Thursday evening.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has just returned from Tehran, where he took part in a summit of the Caspian Sea states and, also, met his Iranian counterpart. The Russian President expressed support for Iran's right to peaceful nuclear power. The West, led by the U.S., fears Iran is using its nuclear programme to produce weapons. Mr Putin and Mr Olmert also discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, ahead of a U.S.-sponsored peace conference in Washington next month.
