Uzbek President Islam Karimov has been announced the winner of Sunday's presidential election. He received 88 per cent of the votes with the turnout reaching 91 per cent.

Karimov has already been leading the country for 18 years. Meanwhile, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe says the election failed to meet democratic standards as the political environment in the country left no room for a real opposition. Monitors from the Commonwealth of Independent States, the organisation that unites most of the former Soviet Union republics, found no violations during the ballot.
