A United Nations Security Council meeting in New York has made no new breakthroughs on the final status of Kosovo. Russia proposes further talks leading to an agreed resolution and supports Belgrade's opposition to a unilateral declaration of independence
“Going down the way of unilateral moves, Kosovo is not going to join the ranks of fully recognised members of the international community. It may get some recognitions, even though it will be violation of 1244 UN Resolution. But it is not going to come into this building [UN Headquarters in New York] as a full flesh member of the international community. It is not going to be able to join other political international institutions,” Vitaly Churkin, Russia's Envoy to the UN, said. U.S. and the European Union say NATO and the EU should define the province's status. Russia insists the final decision can only be made by the UN Security Council.
