The UN Security Council has begun an urgent session on the future of Kosovo. The session was initiated by Serbia and supported by Russia after the province announced it would unilaterally declare independence on Sunday or Monday.
U.S. state department representative Sean McCormack said Russia's position isn't justified because this position is unique. At the session Serbia's Foreign Minister said his country won't allow the province's separation and called on the international organisation to respect the country's sovereignty and integrity. Speaking on Russia Today's Spotlight, Kremlin press attaché, Dmitry Peskov, said there are global consequences to Kosovo's independence. “Russia is not going to counter react immediately. We're not going to act like monkeys, just automatically repeating any actions. This is not the case. We have to think not about future steps of Russia in this respect, we have to think about the damage for international law,” he explained.International relations specialist, Aleksandr Khramchikhin, also expressed concern over the consequences of an independent Kosovo. “It’s evident that the situation of each unrecognized state has its own nuances and differences. But there are no crucial factors that distinguish Kosovo from the situation elsewhere. It’s just one of many unrecognized states. And it’s a pure absurdity when the Western politicians say Kosovo is unique and will not set a precedent for others. It will become a precedent, and the consequences are absolutely unpredictable,” he said.
