The UN Security Council has unanimously voted to extend the UN observation mission in Georgia until next April. Russia was one of the co-authors of the draft.
The mission was established in 1993 to oversee a ceasefire agreement between Georgia and the breakaway republic of Abkhazia. The Security Council also demanded that Georgia allow Russian peacekeepers to travel freely. Russia's ambassador to the UN said the work of CIS observers is being hindered, while Georgia called for Russian peacekeepers to be replaced with an international force.
