British machine guns recovered on Afghan territory

American soldiers in Afghanistan have seized from the enemy two machine guns that had disappeared from a British arms depot.

An investigation into how the militants got hold of the weapons revealed they were part of a cache of nearly 60 that went missing last year and were never reported.

British media claims that the government attempted to conceal the fact of the missing weapons.

Tony Benn, a former British cabinet member and president of the Stop the War coalition, doubts that the guns were sold to the Taliban.

Clearly in the war, weapons […] do get captured by one side and used against the other side,” Benn said, adding, however, that he would not be surprised to know that the public has not been told the truth about the weapons.

Truth is the first casualty in war,” Benn said.
