Turkish military sources say warplanes and ground troops have attacked Kurdish rebel positions in Northern Iraq.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the authoriies in Baghdad could expect incursions against Kurdish militants. “The Iraqi government must know that we can exercise this mandate which we have received from the Turkish parliament at any time,”  Mr Erdogan said in London. Meanwhile, supporters of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, have clashed with police on the streets of Istanbul. The violence followed a gathering of thousands of Turks for the funerals of twelve soldiers killed in a weekend ambush by Kurdish rebels.
