The United States and North Korea have claimed they will resume talks next week on U.S. sanctions against Pyongyang. Discussions in December ended without progress.

The financial restrictions – imposed on the Communist Regime over its alleged counterfeiting of U.S. currency and money laundering – have been a sticking point in separate talks on North Korea's nuclear activities. The new negotiations come amid efforts to restart six-party talks including Russia, aimed at persuading North Korea to halt its nuclear programme.
