A Saint Petersburg court has dismissed a case brought by the student, Maria Shraiber, who wanted to ban the teaching of Darwin's Theory of Evolution at schools as the main theory of man's development.

The claimant is not happy with the court's decision and plans an appeal. The suit was filed in summer 2006 and was the first to challenge the national curriculum in court.According to the student, the Theory infringes the rights to alternative versions and insults her religious beliefs. She wanted the Russian Ministry of Education to apologise to her in writing.Similar disputes have been registered in the U.S. over teaching Darwinism alongside Creationism in schools.
