Residents in Russia's south are protesting after they lost essential services during the coldest part of the year. Extreme weather has caused a breakdown of services in the Republic of Dagestan.
The temperature is fifteen degrees below zero, and for ten days in a row there has been no central heating, no water and no power supply in the republic's capital city Makhachkala, a city with a population of almost half a million. In an attempt to keep warm, people are lighting make-shift fires in their apartments. And in an attempt to solve the crisis they throng out into the streets demanding the local authorities to take some actions. The town's residents have been assured that all the public services will be restored next week.
