Russia is marking seven years since a nuclear-powered submarine, the “Kursk”, went down in the Barents Sea. All of the 118 crew members were killed in the tragedy.
A Government commission concluded that the accident was caused by a torpedo explosion in the front part of the sub during exercises. Flags will be flying at half mast on all ships and submarines on Sunday and all bases of the Russian fleet will hold ceremonies in honour of the “Kursk’s” crew. A special service will be held in St. Petersburg where most of the submariners are buried. A monument will be unveiled in the city of Kursk to commemorate the victims.
