Seven people have been killed in a domestic gas explosion in the village of Vozdvizhenka in Russia’s Far East.

Seven survivors have been rescued from the debris and have been provided with medical assistance.

The blast in a two-storey three-entrance apartment block occurred at about 1 am local time on Thursday, destroying four flats in the building's third section, where 16 people were registered as living.

The occupants of the other sections of the house, 44 people in all, were evacuated and temporarily accommodated in the apartments of their relatives or acquaintances.

A pre-investigation check has been launched.

Local authorities say all the victims of the blast will get compensation of 100,000 roubles (around $US 2,800). Assistance will be also given to the residents in nearby flats, where the blast wave smashed window-panes.
