Order has been restored in a troubled Paris suburb by hundreds of police who were deployed to patrol the streets on Wednesday night. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called the riots unacceptable.
Mass riots in the neighbourhood left dozens of officers injured earlier. The clashes followed the death of two teenagers in a traffic accident with a police car on Sunday. “What has happened is absolutely unacceptable and won't be accepted. Those who take the responsibility to shoot at civil servants will be brought to account before justice. It has a name: it is called an attempted assassination,” said France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy. After two teenagers were run over and killed by a police car locals took to the streets to protest for two nights in a row. They burnt cars and buildings – and hurled Molotov cocktails at police. The French government reacted fast, sending hundreds of police to the area. Dozens of them were injured. Meanwhile, the French government says it’s planning an equal opportunities bill to improve prospects for those living in poor suburbs.
