Fire has destroyed two carriages on a Russian passenger train, about 150 kilometres from St. Petersburg. Firefighters have successfully extinguished the blaze and there are no reports of injuries. The train was bound for the city of Adler.
The blaze broke out around 2300 Moscow time [1900 GMT] in Russia's Novgorod Region. At this stage investigators say faulty wiring may have caused the fire. “We received information that the fire had broken out and we were able to contain it about an hour and a half later. Four fire brigades were working at the scene. Later a firefighter train arrived to help. The damaged carriages were separated from the rest of the train,” said Vasily Kruglov, a spokesman for the Emergencies Ministry. In August, a Nevsky Express train on its way to St. Petersburg from Moscow was derailed in the same area.
