The Russian Central Bank is expected to introduce a symbol for the rouble by the end of the year in order to enhance its image. The symbol will be chosen from among four alternatives, based on a number of surveys and expert opinion.

For a long time there was no any internationally recognised sign for the rouble, unlike those for dollars, euros and pounds. Now the Central Bank and private enterprises are suggesting four alternative graphic symbols. The State Duma believes it is essential to have an official symbol of the rouble as it would enhance the prestige the national currency. “This symbol is equally important as the state emblem, or the national flag. It's an indicator of our rapidly growing economy, which is getting even stronger.  Indeed, we possess the third largest gold reserves in the world,” says economics expert Aleksandr Razuvayev.
