Russia’s Investigation Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said a bomb went off at 8.55 pm on the platform while passengers were boarding a suburban train. The bomb was hidden inside a garbage container.
“The blast left one person dead and others, including one policeman on duty, injured. The number of casualties has yet to be established," Makin was quoted by Itar-Tass news agency as saying.
A criminal investigation has been launched on charges of terrorism, murder and illegal circulation of firearms.
Vladimir Markin noted that all necessary police measures are being taken to establish all circumstances of the crime and those responsible.
Derbent is a major port city in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan, close to the border with Azerbaijan.
