The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled Russia should pay the relatives of a Chechen resident, missing for the last seven years, 40,000 euros of compensation.
The brothers of Ayubkhan Magomadov claim he was illegally detained by the Federal Security Service in 2000. The Russian authorities say he was released a day after being arrested, though he has not been seen since. The court ruled Russia failed to carry out an effective investigation. In 2004 one of Ayubkhan's two brothers disappeared as well, though there is no evidence that it is connected to the case.
