The proposed 100-kilometre tunnel was first discussed in Tsarist Russia, but was soon abandoned because of a lack of funds. It is estimated that a tunnel linking the two continents will cost $US 30 billion. The Sunday Times is linking Roman Abramovich with the project. But the Chukotka governor, one of Russia’s richest billionaires, has dismissed the claims.
