Team Russia’s boat has won its battle to be ready for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race after it had been damaged in a collision last weekend. It was returned to the water on Wednesday after four days of being patched-up.
The recovery comes as a relief to fans and team bosses, with just two days left before the start of the epic race. Eight teams are competing and will begin their three week journey of the race’s first leg to South Africa on Saturday. The 70 foot yacht was lowered into the port at Alicante yesterday evening. It allowed the team to start loading food and medical supplies for the trip, which could be essential bearing in mind the danger of the voyage. Dutchman Jans Horevits drowned in the last race three years ago while the boat Movistar sunk. And even if the crews come through the ocean leg unscathed, the severe conditions can see them lose up to 11 kilograms in weight. That means the type of food and medical equipment packed on board is crucial.
