The first apartment building capable of withstanding an earthquake of nine on the Richter scale has been built in the town of Nevelsk in Russia's Far East following a strong quake in August.

Twenty five tremor resistant houses will be built in the town to replace those damaged by the powerful earthquakes. Next weekend about fifty families left homeless by the quake will move into their new houses. A special commission will inspect the houses to check if they are indeed earthquake proof.
