Russia’s hygiene chief Gennady Onishchenko has started a campaign to cleanup the country’s dietary supplement sector. Fifty five supplements have been banned in the second regulatory change since spring.
The new rules prevent various diseases – contained in pounded and evaporated skulls, brains, eyes and other parts of animals – making their way into supplements. Scorpions and sporogenous organisms were also forbidden. The measures are intended to both reduce health risks, but experts also say it will restore consumer confidence in supplements. The supplements' image was damaged recently by a series of safety scares.
