Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was killed in October 2006 in Moscow, could be posthumously shortlisted as a finalist for the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize.
The proposal was made by the Chairman of the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Yatsek Sariush-Volsky. The prize for freedom of thought is awarded annually to honour and support those who have put themselves at risk for the sake of liberty. To be nominated, a candidate must get at least 25 signatures in the European Parliament. Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan are among former winners.
