Poland and the United States say they have agreed in principle on U.S. plans to install a missile defence system on Polish territory.

Although no details of the plan were made public, the Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski said Washington had agreed to help deal with security problems that Poland had raised as part of the deal. U.S. plans to put up a missile shield have concerned Russia, which views the proposed plans as a threat to its security. But Washington says the missile shield will only be aimed at protecting the world from missiles in countries such as Iran and North Korea. More talks between Poland and the U.S. are expected at an upcoming visit to America by the Polish Prime Minister.
