The flame of this year's summer Olympic Games has been lit in a colourful ceremony in Beijing's main Tiananmen Square.

Police in the city are on high alert after exiled Tibetans and human rights activists attempted to disrupt the torch relay ceremony in Athens.   From Beijing, the flame will travel 137,000 kilometres around the globe. On April 5, it will arrive in Russia's St. Petersburg before going on to London and Paris. It will return to China in May and cross the country before the start of the games on August 8.
