New strategy for strategic weapons

“There will be no drastic reduction of offensive strategic arms!” That’s according to Russia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Ryabkov.

“I don’t think something extraordinary will happen to change this situation. There’s no reason yet for radical reduction of offensive arms,” Ryabkov was quoted as saying.

He told Interfax news agency on Tuesday that there is “no ground for drastic reduction."

The Deputy Minister made these comments as a reaction to some experts who suggested that Russia and America substantially reduce their nuclear arms, limiting the amount to one thousand or even less.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev gave a speech at Helsinki University on Monday saying that that the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty should exclude the deployment of strategic weapons outside national borders and limit nuclear warhead delivery systems.
