An 862nd birthday might not be a good round figure, but festivities on Moscow Day – traditionally held on the first weekend of September – have attracted more than three million people.
This year, there are more than 4,500 events taking place in the capital over the course of the weekend.
As usual, one of the main treats has been a spectacular theatrical performance in Tverskaya Square, near the Moscow Mayor’s Office in the city center, which kicked off the weekend-long party.
Along with many concerts, the city hosted on Saturday the international music festival “Spasskaya Tower”, featuring military bands from around the world..
In some districts of the capital, children have been getting free ice cream. Some local authorities have also prepared gifts for parents who have had twins this year.
On September 1, Moscow also experienced a real “marriage boom” with more than 2,000 couples tying the not.
