Russia's Migration Service has confirmed the family of former Serbian and Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic has been given political asylum in Russia.
“It's true that in November 2005 Milosevic' wife and son approached what was then the Bureau for Immigration in Moscow requesting political asylum in the Russian Federation. In March 2006 their request was granted and they currently live in Russia in accordance with the status of political exiles,” said Federal Migration Service spokesman Konstantin Poltoranin. Both Milosevic's widow, Miryana Markovic and his son Marko Milosevic are wanted in Serbia on a number of charges. Marko Milosevic left the country in 2000, his mother fled in 2003. Slobodan Milosevic's brother, Borislav, refused to comment on his family's status “Our media published information about asylum, just asylum. Usually they talk about political asylum. I don't know if they asked for that kind of asylum and if they were granted it or not. But I'm not going to deny it,” said Borislav Milosevic.
