Moscow police have detained a man who came to Red Square to ask President Dmitry Medvedev for his daughter’s hand in marriage.

The man – a migrant worker from Russia’s republic of Dagestan – was spotted roaming around the Kremlin’s walls. When questioned by police, the man admitted he wanted to have a private meeting with President Medvedev to ask for permission to marry the President’s daughter.

The man said the marriage would help improve his financial situation in the midst of the economic crisis, but seemed oblivious to the fact that Medvedev has only one son and no daughters.

The man was subsequently sent to a psychiatric hospital in Moscow for a full mental health check-up.
