Some recent reports in the media about Kosovo have been misleading. That's according to Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin.
Churkin dismissed media reports saying the UN Security Council would refuse to take a resolution on Kosovo in January. He said NATO and the EU had 'no powers to solve this problem.' Churkin added that next month a new report on Kosovo will be submitted to the UN Security Council. Russia's ambassador to the UN also stressed everything should be made in line with international law. “When our colleagues from the European Union are talking about their intention to deploy a European Union mission in Kosovo, they need to get the clearance from the Security Council, if they don't then they will be outside the scope of international law,” Churkin said. “The European members of the Security Council and some other members of the European Union outside of the Security Council came to talk to the media with a prepared text – which clearly they had on their hands before the meeting started. So they were already in the mood – rather than listening to the Security Council. Gauging the atmosphere of the Security Council, taking stock of the situation, they were ready to try to depart from the solid legal basis of the Security Council and in the mood for trying to do something unilaterally,” he added.
