Just over four years after his famous gig in Moscow's Red Square, Paul McCartney has returned to part of the former USSR. On Saturday evening the former Beatle played a free open-air concert in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.
It was his first visit to Ukraine’s capital and was at the invitation of the same Ukrainian industrialist who organised last year's Elton John concert. Despite heavy rain, an estimated 350,000 fans from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia flocked to listen to the musician. Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili was among those spotted in the audience. Though the show was free to the public, the organiser's foundation was seeking donations from Ukrainian businesses to treat children with cancer.
