Several people have been detained in the southern Russian city of Stavropol, after a thousand-strong demonstration demanding the investigation of an attack, which the protestors deem ethnically motivated, turned violent.

Two Russian students have been stabbed to death on Sunday night. Protesters link these murders to the death of a Chechen student in a violent row between Russian and Chechen communities at the end of May.Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev says the disturbances in Stavropol won't lead to a repeat of the race riots that took place in the northern Russian city of Kondopoga last year.
