A compensation deal has been reached to resolve a long-standing case of foreign medics accused of infecting over 400 Libyan children with the HIV virus.
The Gaddhafi Foundation, a charity fund run by the son of Libya's leader, Muammar Gaddafi, announced the agreement. No details have been released, but the Foundation says “the settlement is acceptable to all parties.” Five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor have been detained since1999 and were sentenced to death in 2005. Libyan officials have said the victims’ families must accept the compensation, which would satisfy Islamic law and allow the death sentence to be withdrawn.
