Kidnapped Head of Election Committee still missing in Abkhazia

The situation in the Georgian breakaway republic of Abkhazia remains tense as the search for the Head of a local Election Committee is continuing, just a day before the polls.

David Sigua was kidnapped a week ago in the Gali region.Special security measures have been introduced as the self-proclaimed republic prepares for Sunday's elections.The Abkhazian Interior Ministry says it fears provocations from the Georgian side.The head of the Central Election Committee, Batal Tabagua, said leaflets in Georgian calling on people to sabotage the polls were distributed in the Gali region on Friday night.Local elections are due to take place in 7 Abkhazian regions and in the capital – Sukhumi.
