Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi has called for a vote of confidence in his weakened government.

The move follows the decision of a key ally to quit the centre-left coalition, leaving Prodi without a parliamentary majority. It's widely predicted this could cause the collapse of the current government but Prodi insists he is confident of victory in Wednesday's vote.
