At least 47 people have been killed by a fire on a train in southern India, report local officials. The accident is believed to have been caused by a short circuit.
The fire has now been extinguished, AP reports, citing District Collector B. Sridhar. At least 22 injured people have been taken to hospital.The fire occurred as the New Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express carrying 72 passengers was passing the town of Nellore, nearly 500 km south of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh state.Authorities say the rescue operation is continuing and the death toll is likely to rise. Sridhar said an electrical short circuit was believed to have been the cause of the fire, and most of the passengers were asleep when the incident occurred early on Monday.
