The Amur region in Russia's Far East was hit by a hurricane on Monday. Repair work is underway to restore electricity. Meanwhile, about 140,000 people are still left without power supply.
Sergey Viktorov, Head of Press Service of the Far East Regional Centre of Russia’s Emergencies Ministry, commented on the situation: “On Monday night, due to squally South-West wind from China, at the speed of 28 metres per second, electricity and water supplies were cut. And the roofs of some houses were damaged in nine districts of the Amur region. Among them, are Blagoveshchensk, Raychikhinsk and Belogorsk. More than 430,000 people suffered the effects of the wind. Five people, including one child, were injured, but no one was killed. The Emergencies Ministry Head of department of the Amur region was given advanced warning and was prepared to tackle aftermath of the winds. The water supply in the affected areas has been fully restored. The power supply has been restored to all schools and hospitals in the region. About 140,000 people are still left without power. We plan to fully resume the electricity supply in the course of this week.”
