An official employed by German police has been arrested on suspicion of murdering and chopping up a man he met on a cannibal website. Investigators are now trying to determine if any of the victim’s body parts were eaten.
Fifty-five-year-old Detlev G. was arrested on Wednesday after
body parts were found in the garden of his home in Dresden.
The perpetrator, who is said to have been 'obsessed' with
cannibalism, worked for Saxony’s State Office of Criminal
Investigation as a technical expert.
He met his victim, a 59-year-old male from Hannover, on a cannibalism chat room, Bild newspaper reports.
The two chatted on line for some time before arranging a date,
which ended in Detlev G. murdering his companion.
“The victim had been fantasizing about being killed and eaten by
someone else since his youth,” Dieter Kroll, Dresden police
chief, is cited as saying by Reuters.
The victim has been reported missing since early November.
The perpetrator chopped up the man’s body after the killing, but
it’s not yet clear if any of the body parts were missing or used
for food.
Detlev G. admitted his guilt when the law enforcement officers
arrived to arrest him, police sources said.
The current case resembles the ‘Cannibal of Rothenburg’ affair,
which stunned Germany in 2001. Back then, computer programmer
Bernd Brandes was – by mutual consent – disremembered and eaten
by cannibal Armin Meiwes.
