Georgia has officially left the Commonwealth of Independent States, with the move rubber-stamped at a meeting of the organisation’s foreign ministers in Kyrgyzstan.
Russia's Sergey Lavrov said the decision wouldn't have a negative effect on the work of the alliance, adding that Georgia's participation had been detrimental. “Georgia's membership in the CIS in the past few years has been aimed at the erosion of the Commonwealth, rather than its consolidation, so I cannot see any negative consequences for our organisation,” he said. The CIS was founded in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union and included most of the former Soviet republics.
