A strong earthquake jolted the northwest of Japan on Monday morning causing a half-a-metre high tidal wave. The off coast quake was centred some 250 KM away from the Japanese capital, Tokyo. Twenty people were reportedly injured.

The tremor swayed buildings in Tokyo and three of them are reported to have collapsed. People might be under the rubble. Reactors of a local nuclear power plant automatically stopped and there were power outages.
