Heavy flooding in western Ukraine has killed thirteen people, including five children. The Dniestr River overflowed after storms and torrential rain, flooding more than 20,000 homes.
The floods are said to be the worst the country has seen in a century. Thirty-two bridges have been damaged and major roads are under water. Officials say 1,258 houses and 226 apartments have been submerged. It’s estimated that 177 districts have been left without power. Authorities had issued severe-weather warnings, but say many residents failed to take them seriously. An evacuation is under way, and some 7,000 people have already moved to safer locations. The neighbouring Transdniester region and Moldova are now taking measures to try and prevent flooding.
