Cocaine haul seized in St. Petersburg

Customs officials in St Petersburg have discovered 117 kilograms of cocaine onboard a cargo ship transporting bananas from Ecuador. The drugs were divided into three items of luggage and stuffed into boxes of fruit.

According to St. Petersburg's customs service, the street value of the seizure could well run into millions of dollars. Customs officers are still checking the rest of the ship’s cargo.

If caught, those behind the illegal shipment could face up to 12 years in prison.
