At 3 am on Sunday Russia switched to winter time by turning the clock back one hour. Daylight saving time or DST was first introduced at the beginning of the Soviet era and since 1981 the country has used it every year.
The idea of daylight saving was first thought up by Benjamin Franklin in 1784. Nowadays more than 110 countries switch to DST every year. In some countries it has also proved to be economically effective, reducing the need for artificial lighting.
