Climate change can be curbed, and it won't cost the earth. That are the findings from the UN sponsored conference in Thailand. However, the experts say to have a substantial effect on global warming it needs to be tackled now.
Representatives from around the world approved a roadmap to curb the growth in greenhouse gas emissions, at the conference in Bangkok.The deal is based on an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, which sets out the costs and benefits of various policies.The report says significant cuts in deforestation, increasing fuel efficiency and using renewable energy can all help avert disaster. And it says keeping the rise in temperatures within 2°C will cost just 0.12% of the world's gross domestic product.“It is of great satisfaction that this report for the first time has dealt with lifestyles and consumption patterns as important means by which we can bring about the mitigation of the greenhouse gas emissions. So, of course, you can look at technology, you can look at policies but what is an extremely powerful message in this report is a need for a human society as a whole to start looking for changes in lifestyle and consumption patterns,” said Rajendra K. Pachauri, the Chairman of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
