Serious clashes between police and demonstrators have taken place in Tbilisi where thousands took to the streets against a Police Day parade.

Several hundred opposition protesters gathered to express dissatisfaction with the country’s government, which has pronounced Police Day on May 6, the date when Georgia commemorates the Orthodox St. George, which is a very important celebration in the country.

Starting as a peaceful demonstration, the protest turned into violent when the demonstrators came close to the site of the police parade and police began to confront them.

There have been punches exchanged and rocks are being thrown, according to some sources.

Protesters claim several people were injured by the police, while the authorities say opposition members were the first to throw stones at the officers.
