Cameron takes the plunge in Russia

The father of “Avatar”, James Cameron, has dived into the waters of the deepest and oldest lake in the world, often referred to as “The Pearl of Siberia” - Lake Baikal.

The celebrated American director, known for his lifelong passion for diving, has arrived in Russia, where he is also celebrating his 56th birthday on Monday.

The man behind the two highest-grossing films in history, “Avatar” and “Titanic”, has taken aboard on of the deep-sea submersibles “Mir” on his birthday.

The Canadian-born director has maintained friendly and professional ties with the team of the Mir scientists since 1997, when the experienced Russian explorers were involved in shooting of Titanic.

The goal of the international scientific expedition, entitled “Mir on Baikal”, is to conduct large-scale research on the current state of the most voluminous freshwater lake in the world, as well as one of the world’s clearest.
