Four special police forces servicemen have been injured, one of them seriously, in a car blast in Georgia's breakaway republic of South Ossetia. The car was parked near the unit's building in the capital Tskhinvali.

The target of the explosion is not yet known. Russian peacekeepers and the OSCE monitoring group are heading to the area.   South Ossetia has been striving for independence since the early 1990s after its war with Georgia.   Thursday marks the sixteenth anniversary of the republic's unilateral declaration of independence. South Ossetia is not recognised by the international community.
