Russia’s veterinary officials say the bird flu outbreak in the Moscow region has been contained. The virus, confirmed as the potentially dangerous H5N1 strain, was discovered in eight areas near the capital.
Its source was traced to the Moscow Bird Market and it is now being investigated where the infected birds came from. Veterinary officials say the genetic structure of the virus indicates it most likely comes from Azerbaijan, Iran or Russia’s southern Krasnodar region. The authorities insist they have the situation under control and no human cases have been reported.
