In India’s West Bengal state at least 11 farmers have been killed during protests against the creation of so-called Special Economic Zones, which the government is proposing to introduce on farmland across the country.

The clashes broke out when police tried to enter villages in the Nandi gram area of eastern India for the first time since January, when previous violence forced police to pull out.The villagers, angered over government plans to build an industrial park, attacked  police with rocks, machetes and pickaxes.
